Hypnobirthing - what is it does it really work?

Hypnobirthing - what is it does it really work?

Practiced by the likes of Kate Middleton, hypnobirthing - a positive birthing program used to dehypnotise you from the scenes seen on movies - is way more than just for water or home births.

We get a real look into how it actually works, and speak with Kathryn Wilde, an Australian Certified Hypnobirthing and Cesarean Practitioner and founder of Belly Birth and Bubs, who has helped deliver over 60 hypnobubs in Australia this year!

And does it work?

Kathryn is shouting from the roof top YESSSS!

After delivering her own hypnobub, who was almost 5kgs, Kathryn spent every minute of her 6hr labour LOVING it thanks to the tools and techniques she and her partner Jake learnt through hypnobirthing.

Now she shares those same techniques with her clients, because she believes couples should leave "feeling empowered and excited for their upcoming births".

Kathryn shares all the deets on hypnobirthing, what led her to quit her corporate career and become a hypnobirthing practitioner, and some beautiful real-life hypnobirthing stories, including an at-home shower birth!

"I love hearing my clients birth stories and how the techniques and concepts I teach helps them have a positive and empowered birth no matter how baby enters into this world"
- Kathryn, Founder Belly Birth and Bubs @bellybirthandbubs

How would you describe yourself?
I would describe myself as a warm and kind-hearted person. I love helping anyone that crosses my path. I have a true passion for birth and that shines through every day. I really love my job.

How did you first hear about hypnobirthing?
I first heard about Hypnobirthing when I was pregnant with my son. I invested in learning for my own birth experience as I knew I needed something to get me through.

What brought you to change your career and become a hypnobirthing practitioner? And what did that process involve?
I have always had a passion for birth and I’ve wanted to be a doula since I was young. I started running Hypnobirthing courses after the birth of my son when I started to see there was something wrong with the system.

When I went to my mothers’ group there weren’t many woman that shared the same views as I did… That the birth of my son was the best day of my life and that I would happily give birth every year if I could. I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and felt completely in awe of my body and what it had achieved.

I felt like woman were being robbed of this experience and I felt this overwhelming pull to help educate families to help empower them to have the best day of their lives. So, I left my corporate career and went back to study. I did my Hypnobirthing training with Hypnobirthing Australia and never looked back. It was an extremely hard transition, and I can’t thank my partner Jake enough for investing in my dream and sharing the load of the house, so I could help others out there and start my own business.

What is hypnobirthing? And what does a session with you look like?
Hypnobirthing is for all types of births, whether they are a vaginal birth – with or without pain relief – belly births (caesareans), and, especially, births that don’t go to plan. It  focuses on breathing techniques, acupressure, soft touch and self-hypnosis, to bring you closer to the calm birth.  Through the positive birthing program, we dehypnotise you to the scenes seen on movies and the horror stories passed down through generations.
The Hypnobirthing course that I teach is a full antenatal course. Couples will learn what to expect, how to know that things are happening and what to do when those things actually do start happening.

I teach real tools and techniques based on science for couples to use during their birth to help achieve a calm positive and empowering experience for both the birth mother and birth partner.

I spend a lot of time teaching the birth partner what their role is and what they can do to help. I found that birth partners were often left in the corner not knowing what was happening and not knowing how they could help. I love hearing feedback from the birth partners as they have a very active role in the birth and help the birth mother when they need it, as a team!

We all know that knowledge is power and during the course I try to make sure that couples understand many of the concept of what could happen during birth so that they can make decisions that are best for the birth mother, the baby and family as a whole.

Couples leave feeling empowered and excited for their upcoming births.

How many mums and hypnobubs have you helped deliver?

This year alone I have help empower the parents of well over 60 hypnobubs and I can’t wait to help many more in the future.

Where would you suggest a mum start when considering hypnobirthing?
If you are considering hypnobirthing my best tip would be to do your research and find a practitioner that you connect with.

During the course I get personal and we go deep into concepts surrounding birth. The better a couple trusts me and opens up to me the more I find they get out of the course. If you are interested in Hypnobirthing courses either face to face or online I would love to hear from you and discuss how Hypnobirthing can help your family.

You can search for a practitioner near you on Hypnobirthing Australia Website. I would then suggest you get in contact with a few around the area and see who you connect with.

Trust me it is worth driving a little bit further for someone you feel like you can trust. Hypnobirthing Australia has some of the most amazing practitioners out there. You are in good hands trust me. If you would like me to help you find a practitioner in your area get in contact.

Does hypnobirthing really work?

I am shouting this from the roof top.. YESSSSS!

The tools and techniques that I teach are incredible. During my birth experience spent 6 hours loving every minute of my labour, while being supported by my partner the whole time. The tools my partner was able to provide e.g. acupressure and light touch were game changers. I went in open to pain relief (gas and epidural) but I didn’t even think about asking for it, not even once. I birthed my beautiful son who was almost 5kgs after a beautiful labour. Yes he was that big! If I can do it, you can too!

I read emails from my clients all the time reading their birth stories and discussing how amazing their experience was.

I would say the most important thing that I teach is that I prepare you to calming and positively anticipate your birth no matter how your birth unfolds. I have no idea what you birth will look like. I have never once heard the same birth story and I don’t plan on either. So I prepare you in the best way I know how, and that’s for everything. I want you to know in your heart that you gave your baby the best birth you could have, no matter how baby chooses to come into this world. I have beautiful birth stories on my website if you’d like to read more.

Hypnobirthing is not just for water or home births, Hypnobirthing is for all births. I would go as far to say as if you are having a hospital birth this course is of greater importance to you.

Do you have a memorable hypnobirthing moment with one of your clients?
I have so many memorable moments with so many different clients.

The first one that comes to mind is when I received photos of one of my client holding her baby in her arms after she birthed her son in the shower. She had been previously told she needed a caesarean. I cried when I got the news and knew how happy she would be with herself.

I love getting to visit the new little hypnobubs and each one gets added to my favourite moments (we can have unlimited favourites right?) I also loved being told that a client’s baby gets excited whenever they hear me talking. How adorable is that?!

Another big moment was from a client asking me to attend their birth to help support them both. This email again brought tears to my eyes as they detailed how I had helped them gain their confidence and changed their mindset from fear based to excited about their birth. They said they felt a true connect to me and that they would be forever grateful. This warmed my heart in a way I can’t describe, to know your passion in life is helping others is a rare and true gift.
It’s hard not to make connections with all my clients and I truly cherish every couples that comes through my course.
