At Work With Ben & Ellie Baby:
A little piece of you in a sentence?
As well as both having origins in Wollongong and being mums of two…
Julie is a lawyer turned marketer with a creative flair and a penchant for good design.
Jess is an Executive MBA graduate and communications gun with a soft spot for politics and a love for regional development and advocacy.
What inspired you to start Ben & Ellie Baby?
Our first borns, Ben and Ellie.
Our babies were born only three weeks apart, so we were always in contact about what was and wasn’t helping us as new mamas.
Inspiration hit when we started reflecting on the shortfalls of the countless baby change mats, nappy wallets and baby bags we tried. Nappy changes were our target as they were happening 10-12 times a day in the newborn days and it wasn’t a frustration that was going to go away. When we looked at the products we were using on a daily basis, we could see so many ways to improve them and make life easier for mums.
So, we started our journey with some knowledge, a lot of persistence and a very specific goal in mind. After 18 months of innovation and development, our flagship product, the Nappy Change Clutch was born.
How would you describe your business ethos in one sentence?
We are all about honouring the woman behind every mum, giving her a seamless, stylish and worry free experience of nappy changes on-the-go.
What is your favourite part about running your business?
The flexibility, the endless possibilities, the thrill of creating something uniquely ours and the ability work alongside as friends as all been incredible!
So many amazing things it’s impossible to narrow it down to just one.
What does a typical Monday look like for you?
Mondays for us are all about getting back into routine after a weekend of fun and chaos!
Do you remember your first customer/client? What do you remember about that moment?
How could we forget?! It’s such a momentous occasion for any business. The elation of seeing that first customer and feeling like we did it.
We started. We’re live. We’ve got a business. And this customer has an awesome Nappy Change Clutch coming their way!
What advice would you give another mummy looking to start their own business?
Don’t be afraid to give it a go! Business is an ongoing series of multi-tasking and problem solving, and we don’t know anyone better at that than mums.
If you had to choose; Jeans or Tights?
How is that even a question? Tights, of course. Are you even a mum in a pandemic if you don’t live in tights at the moment?
Meanwhile, our kids look like they could step off the fashion runway decked out head to toe in the cutest outfits…
What’s your favourite quote?
“The days are long, but the years are short!”
