Tea Or Coffee?:

Tea Or Coffee?:

‘2 cups of coffee a day’, I’m sure you’ve heard this one a lot if you’re pregnant or have been.
But what does it really mean for you and your caffeine intake while pregnant?

We share some deets about drinking while pregnant, or more importantly is that ‘2 cups of coffee a day’ really what it means?

You might be surprised to find out that many of the foods and drinks you consume actually contribute to your caffeine intake.

While most evidence on caffeine while pregnant is not very conclusive, drinking lots of coffee or ingesting caffeine, even chocolate, may not be definitive to cause birth defects, however if you’re planning for a bub, you should be aware of risks of miscarriage or low birth weight.

Experts suggest limiting caffeine to 300mg a day.

But what does that even mean?

Here’s a list of some common caffeine food & drinks to help give you a guide*

  • one cup of instant coffee: 60 – 80mg
  • one cup of filter coffee: 60 – 120mg
  • one cup of tea: 10 – 50mg
  • one 375g can of cola: 48.75mg
  • one 250ml can of energy drink: 80mg
  • one 100g bar of milk chocolate: around 20mg

Now everyone is different and we recommend discussing with your physician before you cut anything out of your diet but there are caffeine free coffee and tea options on the market that will satisfy your cravings whilst keeping your caffeine levels to a minimum.
